Evaluation.

We had about two months to complete the fuji film assignment. During this time we had to take 5 or more images on a fuji film and enter them in to the fuji film competition. I changed my idea two weeks into this assignment because I didn't like my original idea so in the end I decided to base my assignment around decay and abandonment. We visited an abandoned mental hospital in Derby so I took a camera and a black and white film because I thought the final images would look better in black and white.

I researched many artists to inspire me and give me different ideas for this assignment my favorite that i researched was probably Matthew Merrett because of his pure passion for what he does. Nothing stops him taking images of what he wants to and the final images are always incredible. I used natural lighting for this assignment because I thought it would give it a more subtle effect and look more eerie feel.  When i got back to college I developed the images and then scanned the negatives into the computer and edit them using photoshop.

I am really pleased with my final images they turned out better than I thought they would. If i did this assignment again i would have done more research and i would have experimented with different locations so there would be have been more variation in images I also would have taken more film with me so I could have taken more images.

The 2014 Student Awards has an open brief, so let your creativity run wild and amaze the judges with some stunning images. The awards are open to all students in the UK, not just those undertaking courses involving photography.

All entries must have been originated on Fujifilm film, then scanned and submitted via this site - entry is free and students can enter as many photographs as they wish.
In addition to being named Fujifilm Student Photographer of the Year 2014 the winner will also be presented with £200 worth of film from Fujifilm, a professionally produced folio of prints and a one-to-one printing/consultancy session with one of Metroprint's top printers. The winner will also be able to select books with a value of £100 from our co-sponsor, Focal Press.
All entries will be entered into a monthly 'Curator's Choice' award where one image will be selected and featured on the Award's website and social media channels. The winner of each monthly award will be presented with a free 12" x 16" professionally produced print of their winning image by Metroprint as well as 10 rolls of Fujifilm film and a book of their choice from Focal Press.
The college or university that submits the most entries will win £200 worth of Fujifilm Professional film. They will also be presented with a selection of Focal Press books worth £500 for their library.

Proposal

For this assignment I am going to take images of rooms in an abandoned metal institute located in Derbyshire using a black and white Fuji film. I will take images of anything that catches my eye and that I find interesting. I am going to use natural lighting because I think this will give the final images more of a spooky/ eerie feel. Once i have taken these images i will develop them and then scan then into the computer for editing using photoshop. I don't want to edit the images too much as i think this will ruin the natural effect of decay. I am really looking forward to taking these images as i find visiting abandoned places really interesting and mesmerizing. 

Walter Arnold

Walter Arnold is a self taught fine art photographer based in Florida USA. 

He first began his love for photography when he brought his first SLR digital camera back in 2006 and instantly fell in love. He came across an abandoned air plain graveyard where he began his liking for taking images of forgotten places. since then he has been searching for his own personal style in photography and he calls it "The art of abandonment".

Walter has taking images of many different places such as anything from abandoned brewery's, Hotels, Islands, Sanatoriums and houses. He also experiments with different giving all his images different effects. some are extremely detailed and some are just simple images of a single object.

i think this makes his work a lot more interesting to look at and a very diverse.Walter doesn't just take images of abandonment he also takes other images like portraits, Weddings and also landscapes.

I really love his air plain graveyard gallery because it is different to taking images of just forgotten buildings, its a lot more interesting and make you think how the plains got there and if they had crashed or not.

 

Dan Marbaix

Daniel Marbaix is a photographer who explores abandoned buildings and documents them by taking images. He has photographed everything from abandoned churches, hospitals, schools and hotels. The images daniel takes are mesmerizing and make you think why the people might of left  these placed in the condition they are in and why they were in such a rush to leave.

Daniel Marbaix has been arrested over twenty times for trespassing and has been had held at gun point before but these are the things he has to consider to do the things he is passionate about.. His work is beautiful but also upsetting at the same time.

I really love his work i think it is very similar to Niki Feijens work though in many ways such as the fact that most of the things left behind are still in the same places and how the rooms some how have i tidiness about then despite the decay.
